A Fun Day at the Audubon Zoo

A couple of weeks ago, our co-op went down to New Orleans and had a fun fuildtrip at the Audubon Zoo!

Here are some pictures to show you all just how silly us homeshoolers can be ;)

We arrived at the zoo at 8:30 sharp!

Okay. So, here's my deal with these guys... THEY STINK! For such pretty birds they reek :{

Yummy Morning Scones!

I woke up this morning, with the urge to bake something! Scones! :) I love to make scones because you can use every creative cell in your body (which I have plenty). My beautiful helper this morning was Miss Rose. She's so good in the kitchen and will one day make her husband a very happy man with her wonderful baking/cooking talents. I love you Rose!

So here's the recipe:

Preheat the oven to 425

You'll need-
3c. flour
1T. baking powder
1/4c. brown sugar
1/2t. salt
1 stick of butter-softened
1/2-3/4c. half+half or heavy cream or milk (whatever you have)
1t. vanilla

Step 1. Mix all the dry stuff

Now if you could pull of being this cute while mixing, your scones might just come out half as good as our did ;D

Step 2. Add butter and mix until "sandy". Add milk and vanilla together. Combine to dry just until mixed.

Step 3ish. Shape them and bake them for 12 min.

I wanted some color on these bad boys.

I gave Rose some extra dough and she made a lovely...Tower? Lol! Whatever it is you did a great job hon :)

Here they are! The finished scones! They were very good if I do say so myself ;) Thanks again Rose for all the help, you're very sweet and a great kid! Love you sweet girl :)

My Cell

This is MY edible cell for Biology.  I'm poud of it.

It is a cake base.

I used:

*Fruit-Filled rolls

*Sour and origanl sour gummy worms.

*Pixie Sticks

*M&Ms

*Hubba Bubba Gum

 *Green Pop Rocks

and *Tootsie Rolls.

After I had all my candy in place, it was time to cut the cake in the shape of a cell...

Then I rapped the outside in the Fruit Strips

 

My Mother told me about this recipe for "Crusted Butter Cream Frosting"

You put on the icing, then you take a VIVA paper towel (It HAS to be VIVA) and you put it on the top of the cake and gently press on it.  Then when you lift it, it's smooth.

Here's the recipe:

•2 lbs. sifted powdered sugar

1/2 cup or 1 stick butter, softened.

1-1/2 cups solid vegetable shortening

2 tbsp. clear vanilla extract

1/3 cup water for icing cake -OR- 1/4 cup for stiff consistency.

1/4 tsp. almond extract



Instructions

Cream butter, shortening, and extracts until creamy and smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and water. Mix thoroughly on medium speed for hand mixers, low speed for stand mixers, until smooth and creamy. Do not overmix or mix on high speed.

Cell wall- Green fondent

Plasma membrane- Fruit rolls

Cytoplasm- Icing

Ribosomes- Green pop rocks

Smooth ER- Non sour gummys worms

Rough ER- Sour gummy worms

Chromatin- Rasins (not shown)

Nucleolus- Red fondent

Nucleus- Blue fondent

Vacuole- M&M

Golgi body- Hubba Bubba

Leucoplast- Almond (not shown)

Central vacuole- Purple Pixie stick

Chloroplast- Yellow and Red fondent

Mitochondrion- Hubba Bubba and Tootsie rolls.
